Three wheelbarrows, 60 miles, two days, two bulls and a lot of mud
To celebrate Garden Re-leaf Day 2013, staff members from The Gardens Group and volunteers last week completed The Big Push. From Sherborne to Poundbury, Poundbury to Yeovil and Yeovil to Sherborne, each team pushed a brightly coloured wheelbarrow to raise money for Greenfingers, a small charity which is dedicated to creating magical gardens for children’s hospices around the UK.
The Gardens Group is hoping to raise more than £1,000 through sponsorship and from donations in the garden centres and the money is still coming in. Mike Burks comments: “We battled mud, rivers, rain, wind, bulls and some even decided to take alternative, more entertaining routes (let’s say) which added to the mileage but it was a real team effort. Thank you to everyone involved - we’re all thrilled with the amount raised so far and looking forward to next year’s walk already!”
Garden Re-Leaf day is a national annual event when the whole of the gardening industry takes part in a series of gardening-based events to launch the new season. Last year, the day raised over £55,000 in total for Greenfingers through some great initiatives from garden centres across the UK. Greenfingers is 11 years old, and during its life has created 32 special gardens. The benefits of these gardens are tremendous to children staying in hospices, and their families too.
