Chivenor’s new memorial will be forever green

Company: Trelawney@Ashford

Staff from Trelawney@Ashford in Barnstaple helped plant 18 evergreen shrubs at the Royal Marines base near Braunton recently (May 7, 2014).

Peter Burks, Regional Manager of Trelawney@Ashford, said: “We were delighted we could help RMB Chivenor with their new military memorial project. We donated 18 griselinia, which is a good coastal, hedging evergreen shrub. They will provide edging and a windbreak for the other planting in their water reflection garden.

“Evergreens provide year round colour and as the name suggests they are constant, which we feel is a fitting attribute to a memorial garden.”

Chivenor was an RAF base until 1994. The Commando Logistic Regiment Royal Marines (CLR) is now situated at Chivenor. It is home to personnel from all three services, including Mechanical Engineers, Medics and Logisticians.

The Regiment’s purpose is to provide every aspect of combat service support for 3 Commando Brigade, anywhere in the world. In particular the Regiment’s aims are to provide support for brigade amphibious operations when sea-based, during offload across a beach or port and over a large battle space on land.

Stuart Rason, Padre at RMB Chivenor, explained: “We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Trelawney@Ashford for its plant donation. Its support is much appreciated.

“No other military unit has such an eclectic mix of cap badges working together. It is a tri-service base, which is why we wanted to create a memorial to all three services.

“When completed the memorial garden will have a formal space for parades and also three individual reflection gardens. The three gardens will mirror the three elements of the services – air, land and water.

“It will be the main military memorial for North Devon. We hope to finish it in the next few months and the general public will be able to access it at anytime once it is open. We have had great support from the community while building the garden and would like to thank everyone for their help.”
