Glee’s 50-year heroes are revealed

As Glee (10th – 12th September, NEC Birmingham) marked its monumental 50th anniversary this week, its 50-year heroes have been revealed. Voted for by Glee’s retailer and supplier audience, in partnership with Garden Trade News, these ‘heroes’ represent the most iconic figures, products, and innovations that have shaped the sector over the past five decades.

This milestone anniversary presented a unique opportunity to reflect on the people, products, and plants that have made an indelible mark on the garden retail industry, and with four categories to vote for there was plenty of debate and discussion as people voted for their favourite.

Most Influential People of the last 50 years

Recognising those individuals whose vision and leadership have had a lasting impact on the industry. This category saw four names gain the most votes:

  • Paris Natar
  • Edward Conroy
  • Caroline Owen
  • John Ashley

Characters of Glee’s 50 Years

Celebrating those who have brought energy, passion, and personality to Glee over the years. Receiving the most votes were:

  • Peter Seabrook
  • Boyd Douglas-Davies
  • Anthony Harker
  • Derek Bunker
  • Nick Davies

A special mention was also awarded to the duo of the last fifty years, Stuart Kitchen & Michelle de Lavis-Trafford.

Hero Product of the Past 50 Years

Recognising those innovative products that have become garden retail staples, it was Miracle Gro that scooped the accolade.

Hero Plant of the Past 50 Years

Honouring the most beloved and enduring plants sold through garden centres.  Two winners were selected, Surfinia Petunias and Hydrangeas.
