Staff sow 40,000 poppies in remembrance of WW1
Staff at a garden centre in Cornwall have sown 40,000 Flanders poppy seeds around the entrance to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War 1 (WW1).
The poppies will flower in the summer at Trelawney Garden Leisure @ Wadebridge.
Peter Burks, General Manager of Trelawney@Wadebridge in Sladesbridge, said: “We wanted to do something at the garden centre to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1 and it seemed fitting to plant poppies.
“It will look wonderful once they have all flowered and a very fitting way to remember all those that were lost.
“The sowing event also linked to the recent National Gardening Week, which was launched three years ago by the Royal Horticultural Society and has since grown into the country’s biggest annual celebration of gardening.”
Trelawney@Wadebridge will have 1,000 packets of Flanders poppy seeds in stock and also 12 other varieties such as ladybird, coral reef, orientale brilliant and blue meconopsis for customers to purchase to help mark the event.
