Derek Jarman to become BPOA chairman designate
The BPOA are delighted to announce that, following a management committee meeting this week, Derek Jarman has been co-opted as a member of the committee and will become chairman designate with his position being confirmed at the AGM in January next.
Derek has been a Director of Hayloft Plants Ltd since 2007. Hayloft is a multichannel grower and retailer of garden plants.
Prior to this he worked in a number of different roles including periods with plant propagators, R.Delamore Ltd, Proculture Plants and ICI Fertilizers. Derek has a BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Science from the University of Nottingham and comes from a small family farm in South Cambridgeshire.
He has held several positions in the industry including HDC Board Member and NFU Horticulture and Potatoes Board Member. He writes in the NFU British Farmer & Grower magazine (West Midlands Edition) three or four times a year and is a member of the Garden Media Guild.
Also, Simon Crawford has been elected to deputy chair in order to support the current chair, James Alcaraz, who will be standing down at the next AGM.
Simon also brings with him a wealth of experience from his time in plant breeding and young plant management as well as his current position as manager of Burpee Europe Ltd. Burpees' main focus in Europe is the breeding and development of new varieties of vegetables and flowers for use by home gardeners around the world.
Welcoming these two officers of the Association, James Alcaraz (chairman) said “We are really excited that we can announce these two additions to our committee at this time when the BPOA is developing its service to the growing membership. I wish Derek and Simon great success working together with the committee and all our members in future.”
