A tribute to Andy Bunker

Andy Bunker, a well‑known and widely respected figure in UK garden retail, died on 13 July 2026, aged 63, following a short battle with pancreatic cancer. His death has been met with warm tributes from across the horticultural industry, reflecting the high regard in which he was held.

Andy spent 48 years at Alton Garden Centre, joining his father, Derek, straight from school at the age of 15. He began in the warehouse before establishing the centre’s garden machinery department and later becoming plants manager. Over the decades he developed deep expertise in plant buying, working not only for Alton but also as a buyer for the Tillington Group.

Of Alton he said, “We are an old fashioned, plant oriented, garden centre with a good restaurant”.

When Alton was sold to British Garden Centres in March this year, he joined their plant buying team. His practical knowledge and clear, confident judgement made him a trusted voice for growers and retailers alike.

Beyond his commercial roles, Andy contributed significantly to wider industry. He served as a judge for RHS Plant Trials and was a long‑standing judge for the GIMA awards and for Glee.  He had also been a member of the fundraising committee of the Greenfingers Charity, was often sought out as a conference speaker and was a keen competitor in industry golf days.

He was also a regular contributor to Gardenforum trading reviews.  His comments such as “A trolley full of hardy nursery is more cash in a trolley in March than a trolley full of bedding in April,” were always as insightful as they were candid.
