Results show last year was difficult for many garden companies

Each month Gardenforum’s Company Results pages are updated with the latest accounts filed at Companies House. Here is a summary of the companies updated recently. The report includes sales, profit before tax, fixed assets, interest paid, total borrowings and shareholders funds for the last 3 years.

Suppliers / Manufacturers
Sales fell for the second year to £9.1m for Alexander Rose. Profits fell sharply to £96k for year ending (y/e) Aug 2010.
Turnover recovered at Baker & Taylor (UK) to £30m. Profits recovered also to £1.1m for y/e June 2010.
Barrettine Products returned a profit of £93k on sales of £644k for y/e Dec 2009.
Bayer plc increased sales 1% to £375m profits increased 24% to £39.3m. Turnover slipped back 2% at Bayer Crop Science to £256m, but profit doubled to £18.6m for y/e Dec 2010.
Big K Products increased turnover to £14.8m, yet profits fell sharply to £532k for y/e Sep 2010.
Turnover held at £12.3m for Bulrush Horticulture, yet profits rose to £1.3m for y/e Sep 2010.
Contico Manufacturing reported sales of £13.4m for the 17 months ending Sep 2010. Profits were £253k.
Sales fell by almost half at Countax to £10m. There was a loss of £6m for y/e June 2010. Borrowings increased to £12.5m.
Delwyn Enterprises (shed manufacturer) increased sales to £7.3m. Profits extended to £1m for y/e Aug 2010.
DLF Trifolium grew sales 5% to £27.9m, while profits declined a little to £1.1m for y/e Jun 2010.
Sales were static at Eden-Halls Greenhouses at £8.9m. Profits fell sharply to £194k for y/e Dec 2010.
Fordingbridge plc increased sales to £6m, profits fell slightly to £574k for y/e Dec 2010.
Turnover fell 23% for mower wholesaler/retailer GJ Handy & Co with sales of £16m. Profits were lower at £761k for y/e Nov 2010.
Glendale Horticulture published reduced sales of £2.5m and losses of £1.5m for y/e Dec 2010.
Grange Fencing increased sales to £29.4m. Profit more than doubled to £388k for y/e Sep 2010.
Hartman Outdoor Products UK increased sales by 29% to £9.7m, but fell to a loss of £396k for y/e July 2010.
Hozelock sales jumped 26% to £54m, profits also increased sharply to £4.3m for y/e Sep 2010.
Marshalls plc increased sales to £323m and returned to profit with £9.2m for y/e Dec 2010.
MPB Garden Buildings increased sales to £12.6m and profits jumped to £585k for y/e Sep 2010.
Sales fell for the second year at Norfolk Leisure - Acamp to £1.9m, but returned a profit of £688k for y/e June 2010.
Spear & Jackson Garden Products increased sales to £11.3m and returned to profit with £101k for y/e Sept 2010. See also Spear & Jackson plc on Gardenforum – Company Results.
Spotless Punch increased sales 46% to £31.3m. There was a return to profit with £824k for y/e Dec 2009.
Suttons Consumer Products increased sales by 5% to £19.7m. Profits fell back to £791k for y/e June 2010.
Turnover was static at £22.7m for Synchemicals. Profits increased to £1.6m for y/e Aug 2010. Vitax, its subsidiary, increased sales to £8.5m and profits to £616k.
Turnover fell 5% at Tom Chambers to £8.0m, profits increased slightly to £353k for y/e July 2010.
Sales at William Sinclair Horticulture recovered to £45.2m. Profits jumped to £2.7m for y/e Sep 2010.

Garden Centres / Retailers
Turnover fell for the second year to £5.2m at Adrian Hall. There was profit of £11k for y/e June 2010.
Goredale Nurseries increased turnover 5% to £8.4m. Profits fell 39% to £586k for y/e Sep 2010.
Sales fell 3% for Gordon Rigg (Nurseries) to £9.5m. Profits edged higher to £657k for y/e July 2010.
Sales held steady for Goulds (Dorchester) at £6.1m. Profits fell 40% to £108k for y/e Jan 2011.

Klondyke Group sales edged 4% higher to £44.3m. Profits increased 22% to £4.8m for y/e Sep 2010.
Newbank Garden Centre increased sales to £7.8m and returned to profit with £522k for y/e Aug 2010.
The Camden Garden Centre returned a similar performance to the previous year with sales of £1.4m and profit of £17k for y/e July 2010.
Van Hage & Company (Holdings) fell to a loss of £451k on sales up 18% to £16.2m. Borrowings increased from £2.8 to £6.8m for y/e July 2010.
W Crowder & Sons increased sales to £3.8m and profits to £68k for y/e Sep 2010.
Sales fell at Wheatfields Park to £3.5m. Losses increased to £511k for y/e June 2010.
Sales fell at Wych Cross Nurseries to £1.7m. Profits fell sharply to £17k for y/e Dec 2010.

Nurseries
Alba Trees increased profits to £215k on sales slightly lower at £2.4m for y/e Aug 2010.
Allensmore Nurseries increased sales 6% to £7.5m, profits edged higher to £255k for y/e Sep 2010.
Sales grew 14% at David Austin Roses to £8.1m although profits almost halved to £564k for y/e Jul 2010.
Sales increased 10% for Farplants Sales to £18.4m. Profits increased to £103k for y/e Aug 2010.
Frank P Matthews grew sales to £3.7m with profits up to £429k for y/e Jun 2010.
Sales were static for Hillier Nurseries at £27m, but the garden centre and nursery group fell to a loss of £430k for y/e Aug 2010.
Sales jumped 20% at Mr Fothergill’s Seeds to £22m. Profits climbed sharply to £2.4m for y/e June 2010.
Whartons Holdings held sales at £3.5m. Profits increased to £185k for y/e Aug 2010.
