Increased profits show how garden companies prospered during Covid
Results from 30 companies including Klondyke, Tong, Newey, James Coles & Sons, STV, Westland, Woodlodge, EP Barrus and Hartman show how garden companies prospered during the lockdowns.
Most of the results cover periods spanning the second half of 2020 and spring / summer 2021 when other retailers were closed at times and stay at home was being encouraged, resulting in a gardening boom. This is reflected in the most recent company results published on Gardenforum. Here’s a summary…

Garden furniture Suppliers
Garden furniture supplier Alexander Rose increased turnover by +36% to £14.3m in year ending (y/e) August 2021. Profit before tax (pbt) leapt to £785,000.
Turnover more than doubled at BDP Imports, suppliers of Bramblecrest garden furniture, to £42.3m for y/e November 2021. Pbt also more than doubled to £7.2m.
Hartman Outdoor Products UK published full results for the first time with sales of £21.2m for y/e July 2021 . Pbt £1.8m.
Sales increased by +55% at Kettler (GB) to £44.4m although pbt fell -40% to £551,000. Total borrowings increased +61% to £9.5m. for y/e Sept 2021.
White Stores published full accounts for the first time with sales reaching £51.9m yielding a pbt of £8.1m for the year ending Dec 2021.
Garden Centres
Christies (Fochabers), the garden centre increased turnover by +59% to £7.8m for y/e August 2021. Pbt nearly doubled to £1.4m.
Online garden retailer Crocus.co.uk reported a 3 fold increase in pbt to £2.7m on sales that increased +39% to £29.7m for y/e October 2021.
Gordale Nurseries, near Chester, lifted turnover by +38% to £12.3m for y/e Sept 2021. Pbt almost doubled to £3m.
Gordon Rigg (Nurseries) improved by +34% to £13m for y/e July 2021 with a huge increase in pbt to £1.6m.
Klondyke Group improved sales by +21% to £64.9m for y/e September 2021. Pbt almost doubled to £14.2m.
Poplar Nurseries in Colchester published full results for the first time in the year to January 2022. Sales were £8.3m, pbt was £1.6m. Total debt was only £280,000.
Sales at Scotsdale Nurseries increased by +5% to £19.6m for y/e July 2021. Pbt increased to £4.7m.
TGC (2015) trades as Tong Garden Centre. For y/e June 2021 sales grew +27% to £12.1m. Pbt more than doubled to £1.1m.
Whitehall Garden Centre (Holdings) lifted sales by one third to £17.7m for y/e May 2021. Pbt grew to £1.3m after a loss last year.
Growers
Ball Colegrave sales increased by +54% in y/e Sept 2021 to £37.3m. Pbt increased from near break-even to £4.7m.
Houseplant supplier, Double H (Nurseries) increased sales +19% in y/e June 2021 lifting pbt to £1.1m.
James Coles & Sons (Nurseries) lifted sales +36% to £12.9m. Pbt increased +150% to £1.7m for y/e Sept 2021.
Growth at Johnsons of Whixley was +17% to £15.3m for y/e Sept 2021. Pbt doubled to £1.3m.
In the year to Dec 2021 Newey increased sales by +22% to £32.2m. Pbt grew substantially to £1.8m.
Volmary grew +24% to £13.2m for y/e Dec 2021, with pbt growing to £530.
Other suppliers
Cotton Traders has clothing concessions in many garden centres. Turnover increased +16% to £100.8m. Pbt increased almost +150% to £10m. Y/e Dec 2021.
DLF Seeds lifted sales +15% to £44.7m with a sharp uplift in pbt to £5.6m for y/e June 2021.
E.P. Barrus whose garden brands include, Town & Country, Wilkinson Sword, Wolf Garten and Cub Cadet, lifted sales +32% to £80.8m for y/e Sept 2021 with pbt lifting 3 fold to £4.9m. Total borrowings halved.
Growth continued at Floramedia (UK) with sales lifting +34% to £8.7m and pbt increasing sharply to £352,000 for y/e Dec 2021.
Fordingbridge PLC that supplies commercial buildings to garden centres increased turnover by +36% to £9.4m in y/e December 2021. Pbt increased sharply to £1.2m.
Growth Technology published full results for the first time for Jun 2021, revealing sales of £16.8m and a pbt of £6.0m.
J.Parker Dutch Bulbs (Wholesale) increased sales by +45% to £35.2m for y/e Jun 2021 doubling pbt to £5.5m.
STV International increased sales by +52% to £23m for y/e August 2021. Pbt increased to £1.1m.
Synchemicals, the parent of Vitax, expanded sales by +24% to £28.7m for y/e August 2021. Pbt increased by almost +50% to £3.6m. Sales from Vitax increased +24% to £15.4m, with a pbt of £2.5m.
Westland Horticulture turnover grew +22% to £254m in the year to August 2021. Profits grew +76% to £25.6m.
Woodlodge Products doubled sales to £53.8m in the year to July 2021. Pbt more than doubled to £8.4m.
