2010 profits fall for many garden retailers

Each month Gardenforum’s Company Results pages are updated with the latest accounts filed at Companies House. Here is a summary of the companies updated recently. To see the full figures visit Company Results in Tradeforum. The report includes sales, profit before tax, fixed assets, interest paid, total borrowings and shareholders funds for the last 3 years.

Suppliers / Manufacturers
Andreas Stihl increased turnover to £61.3m with profits (profits before tax) sharply higher at £7.3m for year ending (y/e) Dec 2010.
Bayer Cropscience reported sales 2% lower at £256.1m, but profits recovered strongly to £18.6m for y/e Dec 2010.
The wholesaler, Decco pushed turnover to just over £90m and increased profits 22% to £4.6m for y/e Dec 2010.
Turnover increased to £12.7m and losses reduced significantly to -£153k for Desch Plantpak for y/e Dec 2010.
Losses increased to -£691k at Doff Portland on sales down 6% to £9.3m for y/e Nov 2010.
Draper Tools experienced a sharp fall in profit to £3.7m on recovering sales of £53.2m for y/e Aug 2010.
E.P. Barrus (importer of Wolf-Garten and Wilkinson Sword tools) increased turnover by 11% to £38.8m, although profits slumped to £35k for y/e Sep 2010.
Turnover jumped 37% at Einhell UK to £6.9m. Profits also jumped to £211k for y/e Dec 2010.
H & E Knowles (Lye) increased sales by 8% to £10m, but profits fell back to £193k for y/e Jan 2011.
Sales recovered to £8.9m at Haemmerlin, but profits fell back a little to £317k for y/e Dec 2010.
Turnover at £19.6m continued to fall at Hayter (now part of Toro) but losses were significantly lower at -£105k for y/e Oct 2010.
Li-Lo Leisure Products reported a 7% dip in sales but profits continued their recovery, increasing to £531k for y/e Dec 2010.
O A Taylor & Sons Bulbs increased turnover 5% to £13.4m. Profits increased to £1.6m for y/e Nov 2010.
Rolawn returned to profit with £127k on sales that increased slightly to £12.3m for y/e Feb 2011.
Solus Garden and Leisure increased sales 5% to £92.4m. Profits increased to £1.5m for y/e Sep 2010. The group now has no borrowings.
Turnover at Spotless Punch fell 7% to £29.1m. Profits more than doubled to £1.9m for y/e Dec 2010.
Stewart Plastics, now under new ownership, edged sales higher to £12.9m, but profits slipped slightly to £1.3m for y/e Sep 2010.
Performance improved at The Scotts Company (UK). Turnover increased 6% to £115m. Losses reduced sharply to -£412k for y/e Sep 2010.
Vatre Terracotta increased sales to £6.5m, while profits almost doubled to £116k for y/e Dec 2010.
As already reported on Gardenforum, William Sinclair Holdings increased turnover 5% to £48.5m. Profits increased significantly to £2.1m for y/e Sep 2010.

Garden Centres / Retailers
As reported earlier on Gardenforum, B&Q sales fell 2% to £3.7bn and profits fell sharply to £144.7m for y/e Jan 2011.
B E Enterprises experienced a reduction in sales of 4% to £4.6m, but profits increased sharply to £583k. Y/e Dec 2010.
Bents Holdings increased sales 8% to £13.4m, but profits edged lower to £945k for y/e Jan 2011. Bents Garden Centre has also reported for the same period.
Blue Diamond UK increased sales by 7% to £32.8m. Profits increased by 25%
Capital Gardens reported a 2% fall in sales to £8.4m but profits edged higher to £183k for y/e Dec 2010.
Castle Gardens (Sherborne) saw sales down 4% to £2.7m and profits slightly lower at £176k for y/e Dec 2010.
There was a 10% drop in turnover at Clifton Nurseries to £2.8m causing a loss of -£214k for y/e Aug 2010.
Country Homes and Gardens, now part of The Garden Centre Group, saw turnover fall 7% to £15.7m and profits almost halve to £168k for y/e Dec 2010.
D Stewart & Son increased turnover slightly to £9.4m and published profits of £345k for y/e Jan 2011.
Danning and Symons edged turnover up 2% to £6.3m and profits increased to £394k for y/e Jan 2011.
Denys E. Head, operator of Forest Lodge Garden Centre, increased turnover to £6.7m and doubled profits to £227k for y/e Jan 2011.
As already reported elsewhere on Gardenforum, Dobbies’ revenue increased to £112m thanks to additional garden centres. Profits edged higher to £9.9m for y/e Feb 2011.
Turnover fell slightly at Hollybush Nurseries to £6.8m, profits declined to £359k for y/e Oct 2010.
Revenue fell marginally at Otter Nurseries to £13.8m, but profits collapsed to £130k for y/e Dec 2010.
Planters Garden Centre experienced a slight fall in turnover to £7.2m. Profit fell by 38% to £428k for y/e Dec 2010.
Polhill Garden Centre edged turnover up to £11.8m but profits fell 42% to £319k for y/e Dec 2010.
Poplars Nursery & Garden Centre increased turnover to £4.8m. Profits were sharply higher at £640k for y/e Feb 2011.
Raemoir Garden Centre reported sales of £4.6m and losses of -£117k. Borrowings have increased to £2.9m for y/e Jan 2011.
Rochford Garden Machinery increased profits by 60% to £756k on sales of £11.8m for y/e Nov 2010.
Shoots Garden Centres, now owned by DJ Squire, reported sales slightly lower at £6.8m and a loss of -£34k for y/e Aug 2010.
The Barton Grange Group, who are hoteliers as well as operators of garden centres and nurseries, increased turnover 6% to £22.5m. Profits fell back to £1.25m for y/e Jan 2011.
Turnover fell 3% at The Garden and Leisure Group to £41.5m. It returned to losses with -£101k for y/e Dec 2010.
The Millbrook Garden Company saw sales fall 5% to £5.7m. Profits fell back sharply to £75k for y/e Jan 2011.
Tong Garden Centre reported sales 7% lower at £4.0m. The company returned to losses with -£214k for y/e Jan 2011.
Webbs Garden Centres declared a loss of -£247k on sales marginally up at £14.3m for y/e Dec 2010.
Turnover fell only slightly at Whitehall Group (Wessex), but profits fell sharply to £326k for y/e Dec 2010.

Nurseries
Revenue fell 7% at Ball Colegrave to £26.8m. Profits more than doubled to £2.7m for y/e Sep 2010.
Burston Nurseries pushed turnover marginally up to £2.5m with profits increasing to £42k for y/e Dec 2010.
Turnover recovered to £6.1m at Europlants (UK). Profits increased to £171k for y/e Jan 2011.
James Coles & Sons (Nurseries) held sales at £6.1m with profits of £45k for y/e Sep 2010.
Johnsons of Whixley had a 2% decline in turnover to £9.6m, but fell to a loss of -£385k for y/e Sep 2010.
Sales jumped 31% at Ornamental Plants to £8.8m but profits fell back to £409k for y/e Dec 2010.
Turnover increased to £8.2m at R Delamore, but profits fell sharply to £339k for y/e Nov 2010.

Other
English Landscapes Maintenance reported a 21% decline in turnover to £24.9m, but profits almost doubled to £2.0m for y/e Mar 2011.
Floramedia (UK) increased sales to £5.2m but fell to a loss of -£73k for y/e Dec 2010.
RHS Enterprises reported a 7% fall in turnover to £17.4m. Profit collapsed to £26k for y/e Jan 2011.
Turnover fell back 3% at The Horticultural Trades Association to £26.6m.
