Taylors Bulbs make it 33 Gold Medals

The specialist daffodil collection of Taylors Bulbs, based in Lincolnshire have worked their way through yet another nerve racking and tense build-up to put on a gold medal winning display of daffodil flowers at the Chelsea Flower Show. This Gold Medal is the companies 33rd at Chelsea Flower Show and their 31st consecutive Gold with the first being won in 1986.

The display of over 4000 stems features 46 varieties with natural flowering times from January – May and all the different daffodil divisions. The focus this year has been to showcase the range of flowering times, shapes and colours within the genus. Over 15,000 bulbs have been grown in controlled conditions especially for the show with well over 6000 stems being cropped to give enough flowers for the whole week at Chelsea.

Charlotte Daubney explains; “The bulbs are planted after Christmas and kept temperature controlled until they go into the greenhouse 4 weeks before Chelsea.  In the first week we see leaf growth develop and then flowers beginning to form within 10 days. I was really nervous for this year’s show as we have put a modern twist on our usual Chelsea exhibit replacing our traditional bowls which we have had for many many years with glass vases but the feedback from judges and reaction from visitors has been amazing. It’s been a real team effort to get us here from planting and growing the bulbs, selecting and cropping the best flowers, getting everything here in one piece and arranging the display so I’m really pleased for us all that we’ve come away with a gold!”

The flowers are cropped fully open and kept in cold store for up to 2 weeks before the show; they only have an average life span of a few days in the Great Pavilion so the display is re-staged twice to keep the standard high until the end of show week.

Charlotte says “I’m particularly proud we are showing such a diverse range of varieties flowering at this time of year, it certainly amazes the visitors! You won’t see Daffodils from January to May in one day anywhere else! Our most asked question at the show is always “How have you got all of these different varieties in flower at the same time at the end of May?!”
