Silver-Gilt for Sparsholt and its students

Sparsholt College Group won a Silver-Gilt medal for its celebration of 125 years of teaching horticulture, backed by the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation.

‘Plants, Routes & Branches’ is the title of the project to celebrate the part the county of Hampshire and Sparsholt college has played in bringing new plants into the industry, the learning and knowledge people have gained as they prepare for a professional career in the wide ranging aspects of Horticulture.

Students have been working for 9 months with staff from Sparsholt College to create the garden. They were joined by members of the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation. 

Senior lecturer Chris Bird explained how the students had been  involved in all stages of creating the display including its design, finance, health and safety,  growing and graphics.

Neil Gow for the Foundation praised Sparsholt for still being a college that teaches horticultural skills such as budding, pruning etc.  It currently has 165 students, both full and part-time.

The display in the great pavillion traces the careers of past students within the sector.  One, Charles Carr has risen to head of the whole sale nurseries at Hillier.
