Everything is crossed for a 32nd Gold Medal

Company: Taylors Bulbs

The Taylors team are in the final run up to this year’s prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show where everything is crossed for a 32nd Gold Medal Award! Although the team are well rehearsed with their years and years of experience, each season presents a new challenge.

This year, the bulbs were taken out of their “winter” home and put out into the glass house (“spring is here”) on the 23rd of April, in line with the timescales of previous years, but this year the weather changed drastically, and a heat wave brushed the UK the following week.

Now as experts will know, extreme heat for any flower farmer makes for a very challenging growing season, let alone Daffodils that have been held back from their natural flowering time and are being forced in a glass house.

The glass house reached heights over 32 degrees Celsius at some points, making cropping flowers extremely difficult; resorting to cropping in the very early hours of the day to ensure the flowers wouldn’t die from the drastic change in temperature.

One week out from this year’s show opening, from the 30,000 bulbs that were planted back in January, 71 varieties are now cropped and in the cold store with over 6000 Daffodil stems ready for this year’s show which is a remarkable achievement given the challenging weather conditions.

Be sure to tune in to see how Taylors bulbs got on across their social media platforms to see if all the hard work and sleepless nights have paid off! If you are visiting the show, you can see their incredible display of Narcissus in the Grand Pavilion on stand GPD052. www.taylors-bulbs.com
