John Ravenscroft, founder of Bridgemere who died on 26th June, was a celebrated plantsman, RHS vice president and award-winner whose pioneering vision transformed nursery production and garden retailing.

John Ravenscroft was a true giant of Horticulture. The old Bridgemere Gardens were a real plantspersons paradise - the houseplant area was truly outstanding. I only met him once, when he called in to the chain garden centre I managed just outside Oxford. His acerbic comment was "How much of this plastic (pos) are you selling then?" Will be missed
