We are looking for an Assistant Manager with passion and enthusiasm to join our popular and busy family-owned independent garden centre. Assisting and supporting the Garden Centre Manager in its day-to-day running, the ideal candidate will have previously worked in a garden centre or similar retail environment and have experience managing and motivating a team, have excellent customer service skills and be well organised with a keen eye for detail. This is a very varied and hands-on role requiring a high level of physical fitness.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Manager to maximise sales and profit by ensuring efficient and effective management of the operations, merchandising, replenishment and housekeeping across the garden centre
  • Ordering, selling and merchandising stock in various departments throughout the centre
  • Constructively and efficiently planning and managing seasonal changes throughout the garden centre, including creating inspirational displays
  • Assisting with training, development and performance of all staff
  • Ensuring Health and Safety standards are adhered to and maintained at all times
  • Deputising for the Manager in their absence, opening and closing the premises, cashing up, and communicating effectively with the Manager to ensure key information is passed up and down the line

Requirements of the Role:

  • Previous experience as a retail assistant manager or equivalent wanting a career progression
  • Market knowledge and awareness of the garden centre industry and products within
  • Providing excellent customer service and constantly looking to improve the customers’ experience
  • Great people management skills with the ability to inspire and lead by example
  • Commitment, a positive attitude and conscientious with a strong work ethic
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills, working methodically with attention to detail
  • Willingness to show initiative and challenge current practices, along with bringing new ideas and suggestions
  • Confident decision maker and can problem solve effectively with the ability to confront difficult issues professionally and efficiently
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and EPOS systems
  • Friendly, reliable, adaptable, honest and prepared to work hard.

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
5 days per week (4 days between Monday and Friday and alternate weekends)
